Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness and Addiction
Sergelt Mobile Drop-in Centre
The Sergelt* project was launched in 2015 with the goal of ‘breaking the cycle of homelessness and addiction’ in Mongolia.
'SERGELT' is a contact-point for homeless people in Ulaanbaatar. We work from a remodelled city bus that serves as a mobile drop-in centre: an easy accessible and welcoming meeting place where homeless people can come to any time of the day for a meal, a talk or request for help.
Through building caring relationships with the homeless we seek to work together towards relief, improvement and possible change of life situations. Weekly we visit up to three groups of (±150) homeless people at different locations in Ulaanbaatar with the following services:
Provide in some basic needs: 1/week hot meal & drinks, first aid and wound care, washing facility, haircuts, second-hand clothing and shoes
Offer practical help: family mediation, obtaining healthcare, visiting the sick, weekly self-help groups
Bridge to other local organisations: information on addiction care, regularly a partner organisation and volunteering nurse present, obtaining identity cards
Next to this our focus is on:
Social awareness: Visit groups in society to raise awareness of homelessness and addictions and encourage volunteers to take part in our drop-in bus activities.
Cooperating with local (addiction care) organizations
Training & education: Organize seminars and trainings for addiction, social, health and pastoral care institutions and raise awareness of alcohol and hard drug addictions.
